While serving as the mayor of Portland, Oregon, Sam Adams led community sustainability projects and successfully lowered Portland’s carbon footprint. Still devoted to environmentally friendly pursuits, Sam Adams enjoys outdoor activities such as beekeeping with his partner, writer Peter Zuckerman.

In addition to honey, beekeepers collect other natural products made by bees, including propolis and royal jelly. Propolis is used by bees to line their combs and reduce the entrance size of the hive. Propolis is made of a mixture of the resin collected from twigs, leaf bugs, and beeswax.

Royal jelly, excreted from the glands of worker bees, is high in protein and made from honey and digested pollen. Royal jelly is rich in nutrients and is used to feed larvae and the queen bee throughout her life, which enables her to grow larger than other bees.

To make honey, bees first consume nectar from flowers and store it in a stomach-like organ known as a honey crop. Upon their return to the colony, other bees take the nectar from the honeybees, distribute it over the wax honeycomb, and add an enzyme that breaks down the sugar molecules. When the nectar thickens, it is sealed and capped within a wax honeycomb cell.
