Beauty Runs Deeper Than Your Skin

Contemporary mainstream media’s depiction of models with the “perfect” body image can have a tremendously negative effect on women as they compare their bodies to those of the “healthy” model. The image of overly thin women and superfluous weight loss have led to eating disorders, low self-esteem, depression and other mental health issues in the West. There is a tendency to focus on the beauty of the body while neglecting the beauty of the intellect. This is not to say that we don’t work to maintain a healthy body, but merely suggesting that not supersede those that take it to dangerously extreme measures while fulfilling an unrealistic conclusion.

Hudhaifah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (Peace Be Upon Him) said: “Do not let yourselves be ‘yes-men’, saying: ‘If the people are good then we will be good, and if they are wrong then we will be wrong.’ Rather, make up your own minds, if the people are good then you are good, and if they are evil, then do not behave unjustly.” — (Jami`at-Tirmidhi, Vol. 4, Book 27, Hadith 113)

The similitude of this Hadith suggests that we heed our own intellect and not allow those to deter us from what is good by following those that will lead us to unhealthy ramifications. Let us not become tethered to society’s views but rather create our own definition of what is an ideal image. After all, everyone does not have the same opinions about beauty. What one perceives to be beauty another may not. It is within the eye of the beholder. Uniqueness is our beauty and it is a part of who we are. Remember this: “Being the best is great — you’re the number one. Being unique is greater — you’re the only one.” Embrace your own beauty and celebrate your uniqueness!
