Take the Red Pill

The behavior is explained as human nature’s to seek the status quo, the path of least resistance. It is often easy and novel to talk about setting goals, making plans but few people follow through, i.e. taking action on and committing to those plans & goals later.

That feeling lasted about a week until the daily grind took over. Nobody told me that knowing about leading is a different story than actually applying it day in and day out. It is, indeed, very difficult. Even though I was taught to actively listen and use questions to get employee to discover solutions on their own, my emotion often took over and I just gave them the answer. My first response to a constructive feedback is a defensive one. After all, I am omnipotent and omniscience. They just don’t know any better.

Repeating the exercise enough time and you could see significant improvement in your ability to control your response to emotional triggers. You might even like it and it is rather addicting, as Morpheus explains to Neo in The Matrix:

Take the red pill!
