How to Get DOMS in Your Thumbs

Devil may help

Did you know you can get DOMS in your thumb muscles? I didn’t. Apparently, it is possible, and my current situation is a prime example.

Delayed onset muscle soreness happens when you train too hard for your muscles to adapt. Lately, I train too hard for them to adapt all the time. I wrote about that in my recent health-related article, titled When Training Throws You Into an Endless Loop.

And that’s what I did yesterday, and I only used one dumbbell, changing hands with each repetition.

I felt a bit of a pain in my thumb muscle yesterday but didn’t think it was possible to get DOMS there. This morning it turned out that I was wrong.

Was it pleasant? No.

Was it worth it? Yes.

I can feel the whole top of my back today, and my knee has magically finally stopped hurting. (Knees a topic for a separate story, by the way.)

If you want to strengthen your thumb muscles (therefore, your grip) the devil’s press might be something for you. Yet, be sure to maintain the correct form. Hire a trainer or go to a group class under the guidance of an experienced person.

Burpees are not so problematic, but snatch is a complicated movement, and it takes a lot of practice and awareness to not hurt yourself with it.
