Hello! My name is Taylor Kynard and I’m currently a sophomore studying Electrical and Computer Engineering. I love to draw, play games with my friends, and watch/analyze cartoons and animated films.

Effective Communication Design

This example I chose for an effective communication design is a movie poster for Dreamwork’s newest film, Puss in Boots the Last Wish. As someone who has viewed the film twice, the poster does a great job of tempting you to watch the film in theaters. Even though there’s a lot of separate elements in the poster, it doesn’t feel overcrowded or out of control. This balance is maintained through the placement of the elements in the poster. The Wolf and Goldilocks and the Bears are placed in the upper left corner of the poster while Kitty Softpaws and Perrito are placed in the lower right corner. With Puss in Boots in the center along a diagonal, this makes the poster symmetrical. Color and Contrast also work very strongly together in this design: you have light and dark on two different sides of the poster along with two friendlier characters on the lighter side while the more ferocious looking characters are on the darker side of the poster. The color and contrast of the elements contributes to the balance of the poster which help to make it look interesting and engaging.

All of the elements work wonderfully together to give you hints as to what the plot/direction of the film is while making you feel excited to view it.

Ineffective Communication Design

This example I chose for Ineffective communication design is from a Disney movie called The Shaggy Dog. This movie poster makes me want to do the opposite of its intentions. What hurts this design the most is its lack of design principles: there’s nothing engaging about The Shaggy Dog movie poster because there’s no rhythm, contrast, or framing. The only two design principles used are color and is used to highlight four words: “Tim Allen Dog March”, and scale in making the main character of the film gigantic and take up the whole background of the poster. We know nothing about the film other than there being a dog in it because the layout is very bland. The main message I’m getting from the movie poster is that it’s going to be an awful film, which I doubt is what was intended.

Even if someone paid for my ticket, I would not see this movie in theaters.
