Part Two of the Detour Getting to Kariba

SOUTHERN AFRICA 2023: DAY 13 — ZIMBABWE

And finding a bird’s paradise

It was the morning after the long drive on the road. We had been for eight hours in the car but only covered somewhat like 250 kilometers. It included almost getting stuck, driving through water and realizing we had to make a detour of over 1,000 kilometers to get to Kariba, the town at the dam wall of the largest man-made lake.

We accepted it and started with the detour. In the rain. But when we arrived at camp yesterday afternoon, the sun was shining and we quickly hang up all our stuff to dry things out. We had packed up everything in the rain that previous morning.

It didn’t take long before the next rain rolled in and we moved our things back under the gazebo.

Waking up this morning the sun was shining and instead of breaking up camp early, we took it easy and made sure at least the tent roof and gazebo walls got dry before moving on. Having all of your things soaking wet isn’t fun. And it’s the wet season in Africa you gotta cherish those sunny moments in between.

I also took the chance to capture one of the oversized moths that had been around camp last night. This one was almost hand-sized big.

And back on the road we were. Switching between avoiding potholes and cattle on the road, the drive was certainly challenging.

In this part of Africa, it is very common to see donkey carts. Not on the road but next to the tar as they are too smart to get in contact with the dangerous road conditions and drivers.
