Rudy Gobert or Donovan Mitchell? One Gotta Go

If you had the choice, who would you trade away?

Over the past few days, there have been some rumblings in the Utah Jazz media circle of a potential trade.

They kind of mended it during the 2020–21 NBA season, but it was fractured again this prior season. And their bad chemistry was noticeable during the first round when they lost to the Dallas Mavericks.

Thus, the trade rumours.

So, if one has to go, who should go?

Donovan Mitchell is a scoring machine. Ruby Gobert is a threatening rim protector and rebounder.

Mitchell is 25 years old (turning 26 later this year). Gobert is 29 years old (turning 30 in June).

So, who would you keep? Do you keep an older player who is a 3x Defensive Player of the Year or do you keep one of the best scorers in the game?

Do you prioritize defence or offence?

Personally, I think I would keep Gobert over Mitchell. The reason being is that Gobert’s playstyle and attributes are rarer than Mitchell’s.

It’s hard to find a big center who can defend like he does on a consistent basis. In addition to that, he can efficiently score some points, too (though he’s not super skilled on that end of the court).

Mitchell is talented -there’s no doubt that. But there are many players who can fill his role while getting along with Gobert.

And that’s why I would keep Gobert.

So, that also played a small part in my decision.

But let’s imagine Mitchell didn’t want to leave and you were tasked with managing this team’s future roster.

Who would you keep?
